Fitzgerald's \"private label\" was introduced in 1870 and soon became the favoured drop of the railroad and steamship barons. It was made more widely available in the USA and Europe from 1900, and was one of the few pot still whiskies available. During Prohibition, the Fitzgerald whiskey was distilled under government supervision for the national medicinal trade. It is also said to have been a favorite at the White House during several 20th Century administrations. Soon after Prohibition ended, Old Fitzgerald was bought by Pappy Van Winkle for $10,000. He introduced \"a whisper of wheat\" to the original recipe, in place of the more traditional rye, to give it a rounder, softer character. For some time it was the main wheated style on the market, but in the second half of the 20th Century, had to compete with Maker's Mark and the Pappy Van Winkle whiskeys.
