Burgundian Paul Masson (1859-1940) was a pioneer of Californian viticulture. He worked there initially in 1878 for a couple of years, then returned to the USA for good when the French wine industry was destroyed by phylloxera. The first Paul Masson release was a \"Champagne\" in 1892, and Masson eventually earned the title \"the Champagne King of California\". For a large part of the 20th century the brand was owned by Seagram. In 1987 it was sold to Vintners International, who were taken over six years later by Centera Wine Company (later Constellation Brands). The famous Mountain Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains, built by Masson in 1905, was sold by Constellation in 2008.
