Bell Hill is named after the geographical aspect of the area; upon approaching the Waikari Valley from the south, the undulating landscape forms a bell-like shape. Here, limestone-rich soils form a core component of the winemaking terroir. The Bell Hill Vineyard is located on an old lime quarry where the incredibly chalky soil impart a distinct minerality into the wines. The first vines of the estate were planted in 1997 with further plots planted in subsequent years. Rootstock was a particularly important decision with vines susceptible to chlorosis from the limestone-based soils.
