The fame of the Fiorano Estate is also linked to the figure of Prince Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi, a character that time has shrouded in deserved legend. Between the 1940s and 1950s Alberico became passionate about the production of wine and, as a pioneer in Italy, chose to plant cabernet sauvignon and merlot, malvasia di Candia and an unknown, for the time, sémillon. Fiorano - Boncompagni Ludovisi Between his friendship with Tancredi Biondi Santi and Veronelli, anecdotes and mysteries, such as the inviolable cellar, and his reserved nature, Alberico continued to produce wines until 1998 when he uprooted almost the entire vineyard without giving explanations, with an output of scene worthy of the fame it had built over the years. Among the very few people who loved Alberico in those years were his cousin Paolo Boncompagni Ludovisi and his son Alessandrojacopo, already owners of a part of the estate in the area which includes the small church of Santa Fresca and the nearby villa. Paolo and Alessandro began to take care of the estate always guided by Alberico who, in the meantime, due to health problems had retired to Rome and followed its management from there. Between 1999 and 2004 Alessandro acquired another 13 hectares of land near the initial nucleus. Together with his father, he planted an experimental vineyard in front of the Villa di Santa Fresca and then, again under the supervision of Alberico who gave him the replanting rights, he set up a new vineyard that had to follow the one previously explanted. Alessandro, then in his early twenties but already with great passion, was guided by Alberico for the choice of the land, the clones and the planting of the vineyard, always kept rigorously organically managed, up to the vinification operations, the same ones that continue to be applied today, thanks also to the availability of the same workers of the time, including Gianni Valenti, the historical memory of the Estate. After the manual harvest, the grapes are pressed by hand, the vinification takes place in the Old cellar, and then the wine, by gravity, arrives at the Historical Cellar where it continues with the refinement in the old barrels and the long rest in the bottle. In transferring his experience to Alessandro, Alberico reproposed exactly the path that he had followed in the previous decades, except in the choice of vines for the white wines when, without giving any explanations, he imposed the use of grechetto and viognier. Alberico was succeeded by Alessandrojacopo who today is at the helm of an estate of about 200 hectares of land including vineyards, olive groves, arable land and pastures.
