Stark experimented with a few barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon on the property, which was then known as Oude Nektar. It was met with high acclaim from critics and the company was established soon after. Oude Nektar is still produced by the company to this day. Stark-Condé has about 40 hectares (100 acres) in the Jonkershoek Valley, which is considered to be a prime region for red varieties. The vineyards are planted on steep slopes at 150 to 600 meters (500-2000ft) above sea level, providing excellent drainage which helps to curb the vines' vigor. This redirects energy into berry ripening to produce concentrated examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Three Pines is Stark-Condé's flagship lineup, and is named for the three pine trees on the top of the hill that overlook the winery.
