Red Wine: 2016 | Niepoort | Bioma Vinha Velha Vintage Port

The 2016 Bioma Vinha Velha Vintage Port is not set to be bottled for several months, which is a little too far in the future by my normal protocols. It is the final blend, though, and it is worth sneaking this beauty into the 2016 report this issue.

      Detailed Description

The 2016 Bioma Vinha Velha Vintage Port is not set to be bottled for several months, which is a little too far in the future by my normal protocols. It is the final blend, though, and it is worth sneaking this beauty into the 2016 report this issue. This single-plot Porto is a worthy competitor to the fine Ports in this vintage and to the 2015 Bioma (Niepoort did not declare his normal blended Vintage Port in 2016). Deep, very concentrated and powerful, this is chock-full of brilliant fruit and flavor. It's intense, rich, delicious and superb. This will be released in the spring of 2019, lagging behind most of the 2016s.

It's a long way from being ready, admittedly, but it may well be even better. We will have fun arguing over the 2015, 2016 and 2017 as the years march on.

          Producer Information

Niepoort is a historic, family-owned producer of Port and table wines in the Douro Valley, in northern Portugal. It was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1842, and is now known for its distinctively packaged and energetically marketed wines. The Port house owns numerous quintas, or vineyard estates, throughout the Douro valley, although before the 1980s, all grapes were purchased from grower vineyards. Niepoort began acquiring vineyards with the purchase of the Quinta de Nápoles estate, in the southern central Cima Corga region in 1987, which has around 30 hectares (75 acres) of vineyards above the Têdo river. This was joined by the neighboring Quinta do Carril in 1988, and a dedicated Port-making facility was made in Vale de Mendiz in 2003. In 2008, Niepoort added a winery for its dry wines to the Quinta de Nápoles estate.
