Nestled on western-facing slopes against the Vaca Mountains, the estate’s 26 acres of vines—initially planted in 1979—thrive on a unique combination of volcanic ash and gravelly loam soils that enjoy a cooler, maritime-influenced microclimate. Frank’s son, UC Davis graduate Tom Farella, took over winemaking in 1991 and became a pivotal figure in Napa history when he single-handedly authored the federal petition that officially designated Coombsville as Napa Valley's 16th sub-appellation in 2011.
