Borrowing its name from metallurgy—where steel is forged into high strength and toughness by being subjected to the opposing extremes of blazing heat and rapid cooling—the winery reflects the immense environmental stress under which its vines thrive. Stover, who built a renowned reputation over two decades as the master viticulturist for the legendary Turley Wine Cellars, applies his deep expertise to his estate BÁS Vineyard. Planted at 1,400 feet elevation on a punishing 45-degree slope directly across from an active stone quarry, the vineyard features pure siliceous shale and marine sediment. Stover entirely dry-farms the site using an intense, high-density system where every single vine is trained to its own individual wooden stake (échalas style)—a historic method common in France's Northern Rhône but exceptionally rare in California.
