The 45-hectare (110-acre) estate covers land ranging from 315 to 460 meters (1030-1510ft) above sea level. 27ha (67 acres) of this is dedicated to vines. The vineyards are complex and varied, featuring clay schist, siliceous limestone, sandstone, and calcareous marl. They are planted to the classic Tuscan variety Sangiovese as well as Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Wine and and olive oil production is documented at the estate as early as the 15th century. It was under church ownership from the end of the 1700s, subsequently passing to the Bonfazio Hospital of Florence. Current owner Giampaolo Motta took over in 1992.
