Pedro de Almeida. After conquering the resistant Praça Forte de Alorna in the vicinity of Goa, where he served as Viceroy, he received the title of 1st Marquis of Alorna from the King of Portugal, D. João V. D. Pedro de Almeida was the grandfather of D. Leonor, IV Marquesa of Alorna – the poet Alcipe. At that time (1723) the farm, belonging to the Marquis of Alorna, was known as Quinta de Vale de Nabais. Many years later, two of the daughters of the Marquesa of Alorna sold “Quinta dos Alorna” (as it was called) to the Counts of Junqueira, and the heirs sold it at public auction, passing it into the hands of Dr. Manuel Caroça – great-grandfather of the current shareholders – respectable dentist, freight broker and big business man who ended up becoming the sole owner of Quinta da Alorna.
