Freixenet's history began in 1861 when Francesc Sala Ferrés began making wine and exporting significant quantities to countries in the mainly Spanish-speaking countries of North and South America. In 1889, the winery began to shift its production from still wines to sparkling and, in 1914, Freixenet officially took form. Exports were a feature of the winery's operations early on and, by the 1930s, an office had been established in the United States. Freixenet now makes over 1.5 million cases annually and exports to 100 countries.
