2011 | Domaine Dujac | Charmes Chambertin

This release comes from Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, where Dujac owns a 0.7-hectare plot. 2011 was a particularly good vintage for the Domaine, which produced red wines with clear focus, balance and structure. A completely different aromatic profile presents itself here with a wild mix of red berries, especially sour cherry and currant, along with lavender, rose petal and warm earth nuances. There is fine detail to the intense, cool and pure medium weight plus flavors that possess superb depth on the strikingly persistent finish.

Reviews:

• Int'l Wine Cellar: Good deep red. Very ripe, perfumed aromas of raspberry, flowers and underbrush. Sweet on entry, then a bit burly in the middle, showing moderate depth but plenty of early accessibility. A bit oaky today, finishing with chunky tannins. Plenty of texture here but doesn't quite have the lift or treble notes of the Combottes.

• John Gilman: The nose is a very precise and classy blend of cherries, blood orange, a touch of grilled meat, mustard seed, complex soil tones, vinesmoke and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite transparent, with a very youthful personality, a fine core and a long, ripely tannic and very focused finish. I love the red fruity personality of the Charmes this year. Drink between 2022-2050.

Producer Information

Domaine Dujac is a highly regarded and critically lauded wine producer based in Burgundy's Morey-Saint-Denis appellation. It makes high-quality wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, ranging from entry-level Bourgogne to wines made from some of the top Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits, including Clos de la Roche and Le Chambertin. The domaine was founded in 1968 by Jacques Seysses, who had spent the previous few years travelling around Burgundy learning the craft from the likes of Aubert de Villaine at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Charles Rousseau of Domaine Armand Rousseau. He purchased a small, run-down property in Morey-Saint-Denis and planted some Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In the late 20th Century, Dujac expanded its estate, acquiring grand cru plots in Clos de la Roche (the domaine has just under two hectares/five acres here), Clos St-Denis (1.4 hectares/3.4 acres) and in northern Bonnes-Mares (nearly 0.6 hectares/1.5 acres). Dujac has also expanded further afield, taking control of plots in Romanée-Saint-Vivant (0.17 hectares/0.4 acres) and Le Chambertin (almost 0.3 hectares/0.7 acres), in Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin respectively.
