Red Wine: 2012 | Chateau Langoa Barton

This has a juicy energy weaving amid the core of anise, blackberry coulis and warm plum notes. Shows a brambly edge on the relatively open-knit finish, with a hint of licorice snap.

Ratings: WA | 90 WE | 92-94

Vintage: 2012

Size: 750ml

ABV: 13%

Varietal: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon

    Country/Region: France, Bordeaux

      Detailed Description

The Langoa Barton is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc picked between 3 and 15 October at 32hl/ha. It has a surprisingly high-toned, quite glossy, exotic bouquet at first, although it appears to "calm down" in the glass to leave plenty of ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: Plenty of juicy blackcurrant fruit and background oak are present in this plump, medium to full-bodied, ripe, well-made wine. Not nearly as tannic as I feared, this wine shows a forward plumpness, excellent purity, texture and length. Drink it over the next 15-20 years.
        • Wine Enthusiast: Barrel sample. There's great concentration here, on this powerful wine with very dry structure and dark character. The palate hints of a more perfumed character with fine fruitiness and lingering freshness on the finish.

        Producer Information

Château Langoa Barton is a winery and vineyard in the Saint-Julien appelation of the Médoc. In the official 1855 Bordeaux classification it was ranked as a third growth. Akin to many wines produced in the area, Langoa Barton is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant. It does however have more Merlot than its adjacent sibling estate, Léoville Barton. Oddly, the Langoa Barton house appears on the label of the Léoville Barton wine, since the latter has no house of its own. Château Mauvesin Barton is also included within the company holdings. There are 20 hectares (49 acres) of vines altogether, composed of 54 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, with 35 percent Merlot and 11 percent Cabernet Franc. These proportions are quite different to that of Léoville Barton, although the gravel over clay soils are similar, and viticultural methods are identical, employing traditional plowing. Grapes are all hand-harvested and in the winery, are fermented on a plot-by-plot basis in thermo-regulated wooden vats. The grand vin is aged in French oak barrels, with up to 70 percent new oak depending on the vintage.
