Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: An excellent effort from this Haut-Medoc estate, the 2013 Charmail represents 5,000 cases of a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot. Only 40% of the crop made it into the grand vin, which is incredible given the fact that an estate such as this can rarely afford to make these kind of selections. A potential sleeper of the vintage, it reveals a deep ruby/purple color, lots of black currant and blackberry fruit, hints of charcoal and earth, a nice texture, and more depth and length than some of the famous classified growths. This vineyard was harvested between October 1-10, and there are no signs of rot, astringent tannin or excessive acidity.
- James Suckling: A red with tar and berry character. Full body, chewy tannins and a fresh finish.
Producer Information
Château Charmail is an estate in the Haut-Médoc located on the Left Bank of the Gironde river. The château's portfolio includes a grand vin made primarily from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a second wine, Tours de Charmail. The vineyard dates back to the 17th Century and now comprises 28 hectares (68 acres) of vines planted in a single parcel. It faces south and is planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a small quantity of Petit Verdot. The soils are largely made up of gravel and clay and, along with the mild climate, are perfectly suited to grape growing. The vineyard is hand-harvested, and the grapes are fed through a gravity flow system for processing. After cold maceration and fermentation, the wines are aged for 12 months in one-third new French oak barrels and bottled without fining or filtration. Approximately 10,000 cases of the Château Charmail grand vin is produced per year.
