Full-bodied, concentrated, and incredibly pure, its vivid purple (it's not completely opaque) color is followed by ample dark berry and black cherry fruits as well as notes of candied orange, licorice, peppery herbs, and an incredible sense of minerality.

• Wine Advocate: The 2018 The Hexe is a lush, generously fruited blend of 57% Grenache, 15% Mataro, 13% Graciano, 10% Syrah and 5% Petite Sirah. It offers roasted plum fruit with tones of aniseed, earth and dried flowers. The full-bodied palate is bold and dense with a plush, inviting texture and just enough freshness to lift the finish.

• Vinous: Deep, shimmering ruby. Hugely perfumed aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, star anise, cola and mocha are complemented by a suace floral topnote. Pliant, expansive and appealingly sweet, offering lush black raspberry, cherry cola, vanilla, fruitcake and baking spice flavors underscored by a vibrant, smoky mineral quality. At once rich and energetic in character, finishing woderfully long and precise, with solid spicy thrust, well-integrated tannins and reverberating florality.
  

Producer Information

Saxum Vineyards is a Californian wine producer in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. It is known for its portfolio of red blends produced from the key Rhône varieties: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.The estate was planted at the end of the 1980s with a majority of vines now over 40 years of age. Located a mere 10 miles (16km) from the coast, unearthed fossilized whale bones have been discovered here requiring a jack hammer to plant the vines. Planted throughout an undulating landscape the vineyards are located on slopes at an altitude of approximately 1200 feet (365 meters).Saxum's portfolio now features a collection of proprietary cuvées. The Rhône varieties reign supreme, but there are small plantings of other grapes like Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, which are used in small amounts. Strict yields inform the limited production of roughly 5500 cases annually.
