Intense golden yellow, silver reflections. Fine wood nuances of cardamom and vanilla, ripe yellow tropical fruit underlaid, fine dried fruit nuances, spicy botrytis touch, candied orange zest. Juicy, ripe yellow tropical fruit of mango and papaya, elegant and already very well developed, a particularly harmonious wine that is easy to drink and with reliable aging potential.

• Wine Advocate: Blending 60% Welschriesling vinified in Slavonian oak vats of 1,000 and 1,500 liters and 40% Chardonnay aged in barriques, the 2019 Trockenbeerenauslese No. 5 Grande Cuvée Nouvelle Vague opens with a clear and concentrated, noble and finely toasty bouquet of ripe and stewed peaches and quinces with refreshing lemon juice and very fine toast aromas. On the palate, this is a rich and generous but highly refined and elegant TBA with a long, intense and saline finish that reveals very fine cumquat bitters. This is a beautifully balanced and extremely long TBA with very fine tannins and cedarwood notes. A beauty with great complexity and immense aging potential. 10% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.

• James Suckling: A fabulously concentrated and beautifully balanced TBA, this is like diving into a fjord of tropical fruit (both fresh and dried), the vibrant acidity and salty minerality exactly counterbalancing the lushness. Very long, creamy and complete finish. A truly grand cuvee of 60% welschriesling and 40% chardonnay. Drink or hold.

Producer Information

Kracher is a wine producer located in the Burgenland region of Austria, where the estate's vineyards span from the village of Illmitz to the shores of Lake Neusiedl. The terroir here is perfect for the spread of botrytis or 'noble rot', and Kracher make a range of lusciously sweet Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese wines. Kracher produces a wide range of wines, including Auslese, Eiswein, sparkling and dry white and red wines. The flagship wines, however, are the Trockenbeerenauslese wines that fall under two labels – Zwischen den Seen (meaning "in between the lakes") and Nouvelle Vague. The Kracher estate is located in Seewinkel on a vast plain dotted with numerous shallow lakes. Water evaporation from the lakes generates a dense fog which hangs over the area until it is eventually broken by the midday sun. These conditions are ideal for the development of Botrytis cinerea, which is instrumental in the production of Kracher's signature Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese wines. The vineyards are densely planted with Welschriesling, Chardonnay, Traminer, Weissburgunder, Muscat Ottonel and Sämling 88 (Scheurebe). The estate was founded by Alois Kracher in the mid-20th Century, and taken over by his son Luis in 1991. Luis Kracher became an important figure in the Austrian wine industry, but sadly died in 2007. His son, Gerhard Kracher, took over and has run the estate since.
