2019 | Model Farm | La Cruz Vineyard Syrah

It shows a much deeper and richer expression of the Petaluma Gap than the straight Syrah. Layers of nuance and texture reveal themselves with a bit of air. Rich, pliant and explosive, with superb mid-palate depth, the La Cruz is so promising. Black pepper, game, wild flowers and savory overtones from the clusters are all beautifully delineated.

Model Farm is a small vigneron project by Joanna Wells (Associate Winemaker - Kutch Wines), and Sean Castorani (Assistant Winemaker - Rhys Vineyards). Annual production for their wines are minuscule, and highly allocated. Model Farm wines are artisanal wines that have a soulful nature speaking to their unique time and place. Vineyards are farmed by both Joanna and Sean, this being a really ambitious and adventures tasks. However, they feel that this is an important step in order to better understand the intimate, complicated relationship between vineyard and wine. All of the vineyards practices are organic, and are farm by hand, without the use of a tractor. This attentive, hands on farming style allows a hands off in the cellar. To preserve the integrity of terroir and hard work, they incorporate the use of minimalist, and old world winemaking techniques, crafting some of the best Syrah and Chardonnay coming out of California. Wines are also all fermented with native yeasts, many are whole cluster, and none see new oak. Cool-climate Syrah lovers need to seek this out.
