      Detailed Description

Inky bright dark garnet. Aromatic and pure nose with crushed dark berries, cassis, sage, mint, fine tobacco and mild oak notes. The palate is ample with good volume and weight underlined by a nice level of acidity, still a youthful texture with present but ripe tannin, savoury dark fruit with black currant and aniseed flavours, well-balanced oak and a long lingering finish.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The 2019 Viñedo Chadwick is a classical Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto, one of the best zones within Maipo. It's from a moderately warm vintage that delivered a wine with only 13% alcohol and good freshness. It contains some 3% Petit Verdot. The vines were planted in 1992, and its gapes fermented in equal parts in stainless steel and concrete or troncoconic vats. Three-fourths of the wine matured in new barriques and the rest in Stockinger foudres for 22 months, including time for the malolactic fermentation. I was truly impressed by this vintage, especially because of its elegance and freshness. There are showy aromas reminiscent of tangerine and flowers, ripe red berries (rather than black) and a spicy twist from the oak but nothing herbal or balsamic that one could expect given the moderate ripeness. The grapes were picked very early, and the wine follows the path of the 2016, the coolest vintage so far, with juicy fruit, elegance and great tension.
      • James Suckling: Subtle and very beautiful with currants, tarragon, basil and rose petals in the aromas. It’s full-bodied, yet agile and so fine-textured with superb tannins that provide multi-layers on the palate. It’s refined, yet powerful at the end. Suggests greatness and longevity. Lots of blackcurrants, stones and violets in the after taste. Cabernet sauvignon with a touch of petit verdot. This needs three or four years to show its true greatness.

              Producer Information

Viñedo Chadwick is the award-winning flagship Chilean red wine of the Viñedos Chadwick group, which also owns labels such as Errazuriz and Seña. It is a single-vineyard release heavily based on Cabernet Sauvignon, with just a dash of Petit Verdot. The first vintage, the 1999, was released to widespread acclaim, while the 2000 release made headlines when it won an international blind tasting in Berlin in 2004, pitched against some of the greatest wines of France and Italy. The 2014 and 2017 vintages were given 100-point scores by leading critic James Suckling. The vineyard is located at the estate which is the Chadwick family home in the Alto Maipo Valley. The vines were planted in 1992 on what was formerly Don Alfonso Chadwick's polo field (after some campaigning by his son Eduardo who had recognized the potential of the terroir). Vines are spaced 2 meters by 1.2 meters and spur pruned. The row orientation helps cool breezes from the mountains roll down the vineyard, moderating daytime temperatures and helping to achieve optimum ripeness in the grapes. Cover crops are used to control vine vigor and promote ecological diversity and natural pest resistance. Composts are used in winter for fertilization. The vineyard is divided into different blocks which are monitored individually with regard to tailoring drip irrigation and to harvest timing. Yields are kept low at around 3 to 4 tons per hectare. Grapes are picked by hand and rigorously sorted. The wine is aged for around 22 months in oak. 80 percent i=of this is new French oak barrels, the remainder larger foudres.
