Pine Barrens Single Malt Whisky

Long Island Spirits distiller, Rich Stabile, collaborated with nearby Blue Point Brewery to create this whiskey, which is credited with being the first American single malt made on Long Island. It's distilled in small batches from the very hoppy Old Howling Bastard Beer. The idea is that every whiskey starts as beer, but why not distill one from something you'd already want to drink (if you like that sort of thing)? The whiskey is then matured in 10 gallon casks at 125 proof using water from the Pine Barrens Forest Preserve and aged for 2 months, then brought down to 95 proof and given an additional 10-12 months of aging.

Pine Barrens Single Malt Whisky Tasting Notes

Nose: The whiskey actually smells a lot like a beer, but tastes very light and aromatic. There are prominent notes of jasmine green tea coupled with honey, lemon peel, pears and fresh cut oak.

Palate: The typical whiskey notes of vanilla and spices are very faint, almost non existent.

Finish: The finish somehow feels pleasantly fizzy as it goes down.

Long Island Spirits, founded in 2007, is the first craft distillery since the 1800’s located on Long Island, in Baiting Hollow, NY. The distillery is home of LiV Vodka, and is surrounded by 5,000 acres of potato farms, in the heart of the acclaimed wine region on the North Fork of Long Island. Long Island Spirits is uniquely a farm-to-bottle hand craft distiller operation.
