      Detailed Description

A rare and fully mature Barolo from one of Piedmont’s historic producers, the 1969 Bersano Barolo comes from a generally variable but improved vintage compared to the earlier late-1960s years. The growing season offered more balanced conditions, allowing better ripening in quality vineyards and producing wines with moderate structure and aging potential. Now fully evolved, this bottle shows the delicate tertiary complexity typical of long-aged Nebbiolo.

      Producer Information

Bersano is a leading Italian wine producer based in Nizza Monferrato, Piedmont. Its portfolio covers a number of DOC and DOCG appellations across the region. The main native varieties cultivated are Nebbiolo for Barolo, and Barbera. With the latter there is a special focus on the Nizza DOCG, a former subzone of the Barbera d'Asti DOCG whose wines earned separate status in 2014 and which has considerably stricter production rules. In all Bersano farms 230 hectares (568 acres) of vineyards across Langhe and Monferrato, divided among ten historic farmsteads. The winery was founded in Nizza Monferrato in 1907 by Guiseppe Bersano, with the Cascina Cremosina (see top image) being acquired in 1912. Guiseppe's lawyer son Arturo took over in 1935. In 1968 Bersano bough Cascina Badarina in Serralunga d'Alba. Its vineyards are the source of Bersano's Barolo wines. Ugo Massimelli took over the management of the business in 1985, modernising the cellar and extending the vineyard holdings. Cascina Generala, one of the largest and most revered crus in Nizza, was bought in 1995, and now provides the La Generala NIzza DOCG Riserva cuvée. 2004 marked the addition of Cascina San Pietro Realto in Castagnole Monferrato. a manor house and park with 50 hectares of vines. Its principal wines are the Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato and Grignolino d'Asti. Federica, daughter of Ugo, became the first women to take the helm of Bersano in 2021.
