Detailed Description
The 1988 Cote Rotie is a spectacularly rich, concentrated wine with superb depth and intensity. Still very backward, this murky, dark ruby-colored wine displays a huge nose of cassis, minerals, licorice, earth, and flowers. In the mouth there is astonishing concentration, terrific flavor delineation, medium to full body, plenty of tannin, and a long, spicy, tightly knit finish.
Producer Information
The Domaine Gentaz-Dervieux is one of many estates that were lost to time. Marius Gentaz began his winemaking career in 1952, by helping his father. On the 1,5 hectares of the family vineyard, he learned everything about the wine trade, from picking the grapes to vinifying the wine. In 1965, Marius' father retired and left everything in the hands of his son, who was now the sole owner of the small estate. Thanks to his hard work and his quest for authenticity, Marius ended up becoming one of the most famous winemakers in Côte Rôtie and the entire Rhône Valley. Later on, during the early 1990's, a man named René Rostaing inherited two wine estates: the Domaine Gentaz and the Domaine Dervieux. The latter belonged to Albert Dervieux, his father in law, who was the son of the famous Jean Dervieux. The former was given to him by Marius himself, who was his wife's uncle. Now called the Domaine Gentaz-Dervieux, the new estate was managed by René for a while, before he moved on to create his own estate with his son Pierre (who joined him in 2015): the Domaine René Rostaing. Marius' ways are over now, and his wines are the only remaining proof of his incredible skills as a winemaker. Which might explain why they're so sought-after.
