Sparkling Wine: 1996 | Philipponnat | Clos des Goisses
Bright yellow. Leesy, deeply pungent aromas of buttered pear and apple, with a strong impression of jasmine. Deeply concentrated and powerful on the palate, the pear flavor almost liqueur-like in intensity, with a solid frame of minerality and a building toffee note.

Detailed Description
Bright yellow. Leesy, deeply pungent aromas of buttered pear and apple, with a strong impression of jasmine. Deeply concentrated and powerful on the palate, the pear flavor almost liqueur-like in intensity, with a solid frame of minerality and a building toffee note. Finishes with a depth charge of talc-y minerality and a lingering impression of sweet butter.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: Offering up complex aromas of candied peel, warm biscuits, golden orchard fruit and toast, this perfectly preserved original disgorgement of the 1996 Clos des Goisses is medium to full-bodied, incisive but fleshy, its bright spine of vintage-typical acidity cloaked in lively fruit, and complemented by a pearly mousse. This is one 1996 Champagne that has finally arrived at full maturity.
- Wine Spectator: Hints of orange marmalade vie with whole-grain bread and roasted almond in this dry, mealy Champagne. Turns austere on the finish, but has intensity, so enjoy with food.
Producer Information
Philipponnat is a historic French Champagne house owned by the family of the same name. The Philipponnat's wine history in the region dates back to the 16th Century when they were growers and merchants, supplying wine to the court of Louis XIV. The company's 18th Century cellars were part of the Château de Mareuil.Philipponnat is particularly known for the Clos des Goisses vintage deluxe cuvées (brut and rosé), produced from and named for a 5.5 hectare (13.6 acre) walled vineyard. Here, an unshaded 45-degree slope facing due south is regarded to provide the region's warmest terroir allowing the grapes to achieve maximal ripening potential. The house's single plot cuvées are a trio sourced from Premier or Grand Cru plots at Le Léon in Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Clos des Goisse. These vintage blanc de blancs have been aged for at least seven years prior to release. The collection also includes the Royale Réserve non-vintage line and a broad selection of styles of vintage wines.
