      Detailed Description

The bouquet is deep, pure and very refined, as it offers up a stunning blend of red and black cherries, orange zest, game, tar, a bit of red curry, roses and a flat out great base of complex minerality. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and pure, with a rock solid core of sappy fruit, impeccable focus and balance, ripe, well-integrated and substantial tannins, and stunning length and grip on the very precise and soil-driven finish.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: Consumers in search of the epitome of classic Barolo will be well rewarded in the 1999 Barolo Cascina Francia, a vintage which the family is very happy with. Medium garnet (color is never particularly deep here), its spicy-resinous nose, warm, penetrating, and alcoholic, promises much pleasure, a commitment which the palate respects in its ample texture, superior continuity and drive, lovely kirsch and licorice flavors, and unusually supple tannins.
        • Vinous: Conterno's 1999 Cascina Francia graces the palate with extraordinary depth and resonance. Sweet floral notes wrap around a core of super-expressive red stone fruits as the wine opens up in the glass. Over the last few years the 1999 has continued to put on weight. Today, it is a much more extroverted and generous wine than it was at the outset. The 1999 can be enjoyed now and over the next 15-20 years, perhaps longer. This is a brilliant showing

        Producer Information

Giacomo Conterno is a widely acclaimed Barolo producer based just outside Monforte d'Alba in the south of the Barolo DOCG zone in Piedmont, northwestern Italy. It is best known for its Cascina Francia and the Monfortino Riserva Barolo labels, both of which are long-lived and earthy. The Monfortino Riserva Barolo is only made in excellent vintages and is aged for at least seven years in very large Slovenian oak casks known as "botti". Conterno uses this traditional method to make its wines to avoid excessive vanillin sweetness.
The Cascina Francia site makes both a single-vineyard Barolo and a Barbera d'Alba. The Langhe Nebbiolo is the estate's entry-level offering. Assuming a satisfactory vintage, production levels for the Barbera and Cascina Francia Barolo are around 20,000 bottles each a year. In exceptional years, around 7000 bottles of Riserva may be produced.
