2005 | Kamen Estate Wines | Syrah

The 2005 Syrah is a very deep, dark, saturated purple with lovely, highly perfumed aromas of rich, ripe black fruits - black berries, black cherries with notes of spice and earthiness. Expansive and multi-layered, elements of licorice and white pepper heighten its overall sense of richness. Lush, full-bodied and opulent on the palate, the wine displays sweet tannins, notes of crème de cassis, a creamy texture, along with appealing bacon fat notes. The wine has a long, lingering finish and has outstanding aging potential.

• Wine Advocate: The 2005 Syrah (still not in bottle, surprisingly) continues to boast notes of licorice, pepper, spice, and black fruit character. I definitely prefer the Cabernet Sauvignons to this varietal, at least as it is made by Kamen, but this wine certainly has outstanding potential and remains me of a high-class Crozes-Hermitage from France.

Producer Information

Kamen Estate Wines is a California wine producer located on the southern Mayacamas Mountain range in Sonoma. The estate was purchased in 1980 by Robert Mark Kamen and in 1999, released the first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Kamen property spans 113 hectares (280 acres) of land and includes steep and rocky terrain, formed by volcanic activity. The site is situated on the southwest slopes of Mount Veeder and Moon Mountain, and was one of the first certified organic vineyards in California. 20ha (50 acres) of the estate is planted to vineyards, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier for the production of varietal and blended wines. Kamen's top wine, Kashmir Cuvée, is only produced in exceptional vintages and in tiny quantities. It is sourced hand-harvest from a blend of the best lots of Cabernet Sauvignon on the estate. In the winery, each lot is fermented and barreled separately before blending. Other notable wines in the collection inlclude the Lava Block, a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Writer's Block which is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah.
