      Detailed Description

The 2010 vintage in Montalcino was considered exceptional, with ideal growing conditions leading to perfectly ripe and balanced grapes. The 2010 Altero showcases the best of this vintage, offering a wine with excellent structure, depth, and complexity.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Enthusiast: Oak, espresso and toast aromas jump out of the glass. The tightly wound palate delivers plum cake, roasted coffee bean, oak extract, licorice, a confectionary note and licorice but not much fruit richness. Raspy wood tannins provide the framework.
      • James Suckling: I love the subtle aromas of rose petal, dark fruit and perfume that follow through to a full body, with fine tannins and a beautiful finish. It's very fine and pretty. Savory and delicate. Such finesse here.

      Producer Information

Poggio Antico is an Italian wine producer in Tuscany, particularly known for its Brunello di Montalcino wines. The wine portfolio has a range of wines from the IGT Toscana appellations, from both traditional Tuscan varieties like Sangiovese and more international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Brunello is the most important variety for the company with three Brunello di Montalcino DOCG wines produced. In the winery, aging occurs in Slavonian oak casks with a majority of wines also aged in bottle prior to release. Grapes undergo a rigorous sorting prior to fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The Poggio Antico estate extends to around 200 hectares (500 acres) including woods, pastures and olive groves. Around 33ha (80 ac) are planted to vine, most of which is Sangiovese, with a small parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are some of the highest in Montalcino, on sunny, south-facing slopes at around 450 meters (1500 feet) above sea level. The hilltop breezes help dissipate fog and frost, and dry the grapes after rain, reducing the pressure of mildew diseases.
