Ruby red in color, this wine offers notes of aromatic herbs, tobacco, wet earth, black currant and licorice. On the palate, it is rich and elegant, showing medium-smooth tannins and nice weight on the finish.

• Wine Advocate: Gorgeous and soft, the 2013 Fontalloro is another landmark wine from this classic vintage. There is enormous intensity here and the wine is only at the beginning of its long aging trajectory. I suggest you put off drinking it for five to ten more years. There is evident thickness and generosity here, especially in the way those bold fruit favors are woven between dark spice and leather. There are sour accents on the close that remind you of the wine's youth. The tannins are fine and well integrated.

• James Suckling: Aromas of plums, clay tiles and sage follow through to a full to medium body, silky tannins and a linear and racy finish. Love the underlying freshness and brightness to this. Excellent. A little tannic now, so better in 2018.

Fèlsina is an Italian wine estate founded in 1966, and situated at the southeast edge of the Chianti Classico appellation in Tuscany. The estate produces a wide range of wines, including multiple Chianti Classicos (including Riservas and Gran Selezione), IGT Toscanas, Vin Santos and sparkling wines. That being said, the estate is best known for its supple, aromatic Super Tuscan wine Fontallaro, and the spicy, intense Rancia Chianti Classico Riserva, both made from Tuscany's most important variety, Sangiovese. Grapes for Fontallaro are sourced from vineyards straddling the Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi appellations, and the wine receives around up to 22 months in French oak, some of which is new. It was once one of many estates owned by the Dukes of Tuscany, and was farmed mainly by sharecroppers growing olives until World War II. Now, 95 of the estate's 600 hectares (235 of 1480 acres) are planted to vines, generally on rocky, chalky soil with layers of mineral-rich marine sediments. The vineyard has been extended and replanted largely using massal selection – taking cuttings from numerous top-performing plants rather than planting clones of a single vine.
