2014 | Drouhin-Laroze | Musigny Grand Cru

Domaine du Drouhin-Laroze's Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comes from a plot on the slopes of Chambolle-Musigny in red, shallow, iron-rich, clayey soil. The Bonnes-Mares appellation is considered the quintessential grand cru. It has been élevaged in 80% new oak barrels. It is characterised by complex aromas, blackcurrant buds, red berries, licorice and spices with floral notes such as rose, lending it refinement and elegance. It reveals beautiful density in the mouth.

Reviews:

• Wine Advocate: The 2014 Musigny Grand Cru consists of two barrels this year, both new oak. It has a broody bouquet at first that gently opens up with small black cherries, wilted violets and a touch of graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, not soft in the mouth but it feels round and fluid. I wonder if it just needs a little more tannic backbone on the finish here, perhaps a little more tension. I think some whole bunch might have added something to this Musigny. Let's see how it performs in bottle.

• Wine Spectator: Laced with black cherry and blackberry fruit, this juicy red picks up violet, iron, spice and toast flavors. A muscular frame holds everything together, as this leans more to the Morey side than the Musigny side.

Five generations have been running the Domaine for 163 years, Caroline and Nicolas, Christine and Philippe's children represent the sixth. In 1850, Jean-Baptiste Laroze started a vineyard operation in Gevrey Chambertin. He was later succeeded by Felix LarozeAROZE. Each successive generation continued to develop the Estate with the sole objective of investing in hillside vineyards, which was a visionary and risky choice. At the time, those vineyards were already very expensive and not very productive. The bet paid off and today, thanks to the sacrifices and risk-taking of the previous generations, the 11.50 hectare Estate is one of the most prestigious in terms of diversity, quality and the surface area of its appellations.
