      Producer Information

Château Deyrem Valentin is a wine estate based in the commune of Soussans, in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux's Haut-Médoc wine region, some 30km (18 miles) north of Bordeaux city center. The estate produces a number of labels, all of which fall under the umbrella of the Vignobles Jean Sorge portfolio (officially, the business is titled Sorge Jean Georges) . The estate, which has been in the Sorge family for four generations, covers just under 20 hectares (50 acres) with vineyard holdings in Margaux and the Haut-Médoc appellations, mostly in and around Soussans in northern Margaux. The Château La Tour de Mons is a neighbor. Three main labels are produced. These include the flagship Château Deyrem Valentin, Château Soussans (also under the Margaux title) and Château Valentin (Haut-Médoc). The majority of production is geared towards Deyrem Valentin, whose production claims 13 hectares (32 acres) of vineyard with three hectares (seven acres) each for châteaux Soussans and Valentin. The Margaux vineyards are, broadly, split 50-50 between Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with tiny proportions of Petit Verdot and Carmenère. This vineyard makeup is generally reflected in the two Margaux wines. The Haut-Médoc vines for Château Valentin are less conventional in their makeup with Petit Verdot accounting for well over a third of the vines. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for just over 40 percent with the remainder (20 percent) Merlot. All vineyards are hand-harvested with fermentation (both alcoholic and malolactic) by plot and grape variety in concrete tanks. Wines are then pressed and aged in barrel for between 12 and 16 months, depending on the cuvée. New oak use varies between the labels with the flagship wine, Deyrem Valentin, getting roughly 50 percent new oak. Saint-Emilion-based Hubert de Boüard Consulting advises on winemaking. The estate dates back to 1730 and its first owner, a Monsieur Deyrem Valentin. It has been in the Sorge family for four generations, since its purchase by Maurice Blanc (Jean Sorge's grandfather) in 1928. The estate is currently run by Sorge's daughters, Christelle and Sylvie.
