Opaque ruby. Highly perfumed, displaying ripe dark berry, olive and violet scents energized by a peppery spice nuance. Fleshy and expansive on the palate, offering sweet blackberry and cherry liqueur flavors and allspice and camphor notes. Supple tannins sneak in late and fold smoothly into the lush dark fruit on the clinging finish.

• Wine Advocate: Bottled in July, the 2015 Cote Rotie Ampodium is fairly full-bodied and quite rich. The black olive and raspberry notes verge on being jammy but are balanced by peppery spice and firm, savory tannins. Give it 5 years in the cellar to settle down, and drink it over the next decade and a half or more. For an entry-level wine, it's remarkable.

• Wine Spectator: A bright flash of white pepper gives way to bay leaf, crushed bitter plum and raspberry coulis flavors, with a sleek iron edge. Racy and youthfully taut, but shows ample stuffing for cellaring.

Domaine Rostaing, often called René Rostaing after its founder, is a leading wine estate in the Côte-Rôtie region of the Northern Rhône, and particularly known for its Syrah-based wines. The first Rostaing wine was produced in 1971 when the estate covered a mere 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres) split between the Côte Blonde and La Landonne subregions of the Côte Rôtie. This slowly grew as Rostaing purchased additional plots and the took over his uncle's and his father-in-law's vineyards. Today the domaine has just over seven hectares (18 acres) of vineyards in the wider Côte Rôtie – a sizeable holding by the region's standards – plus one hectare (2.5 acres) in the white wine (Viognier-based) appellation of Condrieu, which produces the La Bonnette cuvée. Rostaing also owns a small plot in Lézardes, on the northern border of Côte Rôtie, where he makes Syrah and Viognier wines under the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes designation. Rostaing makes several Côte Rôtie wines. This includes cuvées from both the La Landonne and Côte Blonde subregions, and the Ampodium, which comes from other sites within the appellation. These are aged in a mix of regular and large-format barrels, with a very small proportion of new oak. Rostaing also owns an estate near Nîmes where it produces wines under the Languedoc appellation.h.
