Producer Information
Azienda Agricola Franco Conterno is an Italian estate situated in the Piedmontese wine region, Langhe. Barolo forms the core of the estate's portfolio and is complemented by a range of Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba and Langhe DOC wines. The estate is comprised of 28 hectares (69 acres) of vineyards located in Monforte d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto, Novello and Barolo. Nebbiolo is the dominant grape variety cultivated, closely followed by Barbera, Dolcetto, Merlot, Chardonnay and Freisa. The pinnacle of the estate's portfolio is its range of Barolo wines produced from four vineyard sites: Bussia Munie, Setteanni, Pietrin and Panerole. These plots are the source of several single-vineyard cru expressions, as well as two Barolo Riserva DOCG wines, one of which is made from a single cru (Bussia Munie). In addition to this, Franco Conterno also makes a single Barolo Chinato. After harvest, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. This vinification process is slightly altered for the Barolo Riserva DOCG wines, which undergo fermentation in French oak barrels. Aging is carried out in either oak barriques, tonneaux or barrels and can last up to seven years, depending on the wine. The wines are then bottle-aged for several months before release.
