2017 | Duemani | Cabernet Franc

The 2019 Cabernet Franc Duemani (an organic and biodynamic wine) was tasted in a preview capacity as an unfinished wine. What stands out most at this time is the enormous richness and concentration of the fruit. This is a characteristic of the vintage, although we can expect this wine to flesh out and loosen up as it gets closer to its commercial release next year. The grapes are fermented in cone-shaped vessels that enhance the extract during maceration. Fruit comes from 20-year-old vines. Dark black and purple fruits are followed by garden herb, dried mint and tarry spice. With that natural richness comes extra structure and power.

• Wine Advocate: The 2017 Cabernet Franc Duemani is an enormous wine with a huge payload of concentration, yet there is a relieving freshness to it. Along with the pleasnat notes of spice and dark berry, you get all the thickness and the richness you might expect from a Cabernet Franc of this vintage. The tannins are less silky compared to the estate's Syrah, and it's not a bad idea to let this one cellar for a while before presenting it alongside a platter of rich, creamy cheeses.

• Wine Spectator: A tight and focused cabernet franc with blackberry and blueberry aromas and flavors. Hints of dark tobacco. Firm and silky tannins. Full to medium body. Balanced and focused with a beautiful finish. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Producer Information

Azienda Vitivinicola Duemani is an Italian wine producer located in Riparbella, approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Pisa on the Tuscan coastline. The estate was founded in this coastal area to cultivate Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot grapes.Elena Celli and Luca D'Attoma established Duemani in 2000. Today, the estate extends over 10 hectares (25 acres) of land separated into four vineyards: two dedicated to Cabernet Franc, one to Merlot and one to Syrah. All four vineyards are planted on a single rocky, clay hillside at altitudes of approximately 820ft (250m) above sea level. The vineyards are all coastal-facing and cultivated according to biodynamic agricultural methods.Duemani makes a range of Costa Toscana IGT wines including several varietal red and rosé wines from Cabernet Franc and Syrah, as well as a Cabernet Franc – Merlot red blend. These wines are fermented and macerated in a range of different vessels, from temperature-controlled cement vats to oak barriques. After vinification, the wines are aged in new French oak or cement vats (depending on the wine). All of Duemani's wines are produced without fining or filtration.
