Red Wine: 2017 | Vondeling Wines | Monsonia

Purple plums and dark notes of blackberry open things up, though sweeter, floral red fruits catch up later on. A touch of cigar box and dusty oak beneath, with prickles of clove in tow.

      Detailed Description

Another spectacular expression from South Africa's Vondeling, it's the 2017 vintage of Monsonia red wine! The name comes from an extremely rare species of vegetation, found in the winery's Western Cape home of Paardeberg mountain. A combination of Shiraz and Mourvédre grapes, along with smaller portions of Carignan and Grenache are treated to fermentation followed by 16 months of maturation in French oak barrels before the wine is blended and bottled. We can imagine the dense fruit and spice in this one lending itself rather well to barbecued foods and hearty vegetables.

      Producer Information

Welcome to the Voor-Paardeberg; a Western Cape wine region that has all the charm of an undiscovered country landscape, yet is easily accessible, approximately 45 minutes’ drive from Cape Town. Our vineyards run off the South-facing slopes of the Paardeberg Mountain. The decomposed granite soil, along with habitual afternoon South Westerly winds, give our wines a vibrancy in an otherwise warm climate area. As a destination Vondeling includes a historic Cape Dutch homestead, a beautifully appointed tasting room as well as St Clement’s Chapel; a consecrated church and wedding venue. There are breathtaking views of mountains and vineyards in every direction. It’s a privilege to be able to view the surrounding landscape from the highest peak of the Paardeberg where you’ll find one of the Cape’s original Signal Cannons, which was once used to communicate to farmers that a ship had arrived in Cape Town’s Table Bay Harbour.
