        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: Cathy Corison's 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon remains true to her own stylistic bent, weighing in at 13.8%. Hints of tobacco and crushed stone accent cassis, with minimal wood influence on the nose, despite it being aged 20 months in 50% new French oak. Medium to full-bodied, it's concentrated, silky, long and elegant, a balanced, refreshing alternative to much of what Napa has to offer these days.
        • James Suckling: Aromas of currants, walnuts, stones and berries follow through to a full body with firm, layered tannins and a pretty finish. Lovely polish to this. Needs a year or two to come completely together, but already delicious. Try after 2021.

        Producer Information

Corison Winery is a boutique winery in St Helena, California, created by Cathy Corison in 1987. Predominately a Cabernet Sauvignon house, Corison is famous for creating a style of wine that goes against the stereotype that all Napa Cabernet wines are flamboyant, rich, alcohol bombs. Instead, Corison's wines are elegant and notably ageworthy, and are held in high regard. Cathy Corison developed a passion for wine in the 1970s while studying biology at Pomona College in Claremont, California. After receiving a Masters in Enology at UC Davis, she worked at the likes of Chappellet Vineyard, Staglin Family Estate, York Creek Vineyards, and Long Meadow Ranch, before settling on her property in St Helena. Here, she began crafting varietal Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the benchlands where Rutherford and St Helena merge. Like due to their more elegant and restrained style, early releases did not receive the high marks and praise from Robert Parker who, although noting the 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon's "fine ripeness and body", found it was "slightly less intense and complex than several of its peers". Although the winemaking approach may not have changed drastically, critical appraisal has shifted somewhat and Corison wines now regularly score the wines in the nineties. "These aren’t the biggest or most obvious wines being made in the valley," said critic Antonio Galloni in 2011, "but readers who are willing to spend some time getting to know these refined Cabernets will be amply rewarded." The Corison Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from three different vineyards around Napa, while the Kronos Cabernet Sauvignon – which Corison began making in 1996 – is sourced from a few old rows of vines right in front of the winery. These wines are always 100-percent Cabernet Sauvignon, are sourced from the same vineyards, and vinified exactly the same way. This consistency allows the wines to showcase the quality of the vintage. Corison also has a secondary label called Corazón, which produces small amounts of Gewürztraminer from Anderson Valley as well as a rosé. Additionally, the estate recently started producing small quantities of Napa Valley Cabernet Franc under the Helios label.
