                                        Producer Information

Propiedad Viticola Casa Castillo, also known as Bodega Casa Castillo, is a sizeable wine estate located just 12km (seven miles) west of the Murcian town of Jumilla, Spain. The wider Casa Castillo estate covers some 400 hectares (1000 acres) planted variously with olive trees, pine and almond trees and, of course, vines. In all, around 170 hectares (420 acres) are given over to vineyard. The principal variety on the estate is Jumilla's flagship, Monastrell, and a number of cuvées are based on the variety. Syrah, Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon are also planted. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2019. The estate, which has a viticultural history dating back to the late 19th Century, was bought by the antecedent of current owners, José Sánchez-Cerezo in the early 1940s, initially for the purpose of cultivating rosemary and esparto grass. He also planted a small section of Monastrell but it wasn't until his son, Nemesio, took over the running of the property in the 1970s that plantings of Monastrell – as well as Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah – were increased. At this stage, grapes were sold to local wineries and it wasn't until Nemesio's son, José María Vicente, began his involvement in the early 1990s that the estate produced wines under its own label. A number of cuvées are currently produced with the flagship, El Molar, made primarily from Garnacha and the top-of-the-range Pie Franco produced from ungrafted Monastrell.
