Here too the expressive nose is exuberantly spicy with its ripe aromas of violet, lavender, plum and jasmine tea. The slightly finer medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension with the same attractive texture, all wrapped in a balanced, long and slightly more complex finish.

Reviews:

• Decanter: Seems to show a dark fruit, with aromas of black plum and cassis on the nose, but on the palate the texture remains agreeably ethereal and silky, and there is no heaviness or astringency. Some have joked that this should be called 'Sous La Tache', since this vineyard is immediately downslope from its famous neighbour. Formerly known as the Clos Frantin, it was sold to François Pinault by Bichot in 2008. In 2020 it was vinified as 50% whole-cluster and produced a delicious wine that sees ageing in one-third new casks.

• Vinous: The 2020 Vosne-Romanée le Clos d'Eugénie includes 50% whole bunch and matured in one-third new oak. The stems are a little better integrated here compared to the Village Cru, very well defined and focused with black cherries, briary and light flinty aromas. The palate is well balanced with edgy, slightly chalky tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite focused with a saline finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Very fine, but it will need time.

Producer Information

Domaine d'Eugénie is a wine producer in Burgundy's Vosne-Romanée known for its Pinot Noir. It was formed in 2006 from the esteemed vineyards of Domaine René Engel after the death of its proprietor, Philippe Engel, which included premier and grand cru plots. Francois Pinault, owner of Château Latour, bought the vineyards but not the winery. Following Engel's death in May 2005, the 2005 vintage of Domaine René Engel was sold in bulk. After the acquisition of the vineyards, Domaine D'Eugénie operated in an interim space at Domaine Lupé-Cholet in Nuits-Saint-Georges for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages. In the interim, D'Eugénie established its own winery back in Vosne-Romanée, at the former Clos Frantin vineyard and buildings. These formerly belonged to Beaune-based wine estate Albert Bichot. Bichot retained the Clos Frantin brand. D'Eugénie upgraded all the facilities and renamed the monopole vineyard to Clos d'Eugénie. The domain farms 6.5 hectares (16 acres) in Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot and Flagey-Échezeaux. It produces six wines from five appellations: the grand crus Échezeaux, Grands Échezeaux and Clos de Vougeot, the premier cru Aux Brûlées and Vosne-Romanée Villages. In 2009, several parcels of vineyards began the conversion to biodynamic farming practices.
