From a vintage marked by low yields, warm growing conditions, and sufficient hang time to produce wines with intense aromas and concentrated flavors, the 2020 Bear Cub is fruit-forward and youthful, bursting with black fruit and an appealing hint of cedar. Juicy summer berries, black currant, ripe plum and streaks of shaved cocoa are richly expressive on the palate. Smooth and easy drinking with a finish that lasts, this Cub has enough structure to prove it's no baby.

Producer Information

Pursued by Bear is a wine producer based in Walla Walla, in the US Pacific Northwest. It is owned by the Golden Globe-winning actor Kyle MacLachlan, a Washington native who grew up in rural Yakima. The name comes from the famous stage direction from Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale'; "Exit, pursued by a bear". Five wines make up the range with Pursued by Bear Cabernet Sauvignon the flagship. It contains a dash of Merlot and, from 2019, Cabernet Franc. It is matured for 22 months in new Taransaud French oak barrels. Other wines are: Baby Bear Syrah; Blushing Bear Rosé (a blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre); Bear Cub red blend (predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot); and Twin Bear Cabernet Sauvignon. All bar the Twin Bear (which is released under the Walla Walla AVA title) are produced under the Columbia Valley designation. MacLachlan established Pursued By Bear in 2005 in collaboration with Eric Dunham; Daniel Wampfler has been winemaker since 2008. In recent years MachLachlan has taken over 100 percent ownership of the brand.
