Where to buy New Deal No. 1 Gin

New Deal No. 1 Gin

$191.00

Gin: New Deal No. 1

New Deal Gin No. 1 is a self declared “garden-style gin,” and the term itself might be a source of misunderstanding. Among the most common uses of the term I’ve previously seen has been as a catch-all for gins which are not really gins altogether.

Detailed Description

Art in the Age’s Sage spirit calls itself a “garden style gin” as it borrows from the gin tradition or botanical forward spirits, but does so without juniper. Not true here, New Deal Distillery in sharp contrast to this other garden gin actually has designed their spirit around coaxing more from the juniper. Their pot still (and I quote) “allows juniper berry oils and tannins to remain as distinctive notes on the palate*” The spirit itself has a delicate green/yellow hue which suggests some sort of post distillation process. One possible explanation for color is that there are some ingredients macerated in the spirit after distillation, which would firstly, allow aromatics which are normally lost because they cannot be distilled to remain, and also might allow tannins/oils to make it into the final product. But I’m merely speculating here. The color is unique, and doesn’t seem to suggest barrel aging, and what we do have about the process suggests that we might be entering into something altogether different here in the gin world.

New Deal No. 1 Gin Tasting Notes

Nose: The nose certainly highlights some of the piney/resiny notes of juniper. Hints of maple syrup and cedar add depth between a breathy mix of pine sap, sagebrush and bitter orange zest. The aroma bears to mind a suggestive portrait of sagebrush playa with the terpenic aroma of arctic air.

Palate: A hit of melted dark chocolate, lifted by fresh stone fruit (namely peach), roasted agave sweetness, and oaky vanilla.

Finish: Extremely long, smooth finish.

Distillery Information

New Deal Distillery was founded in 2004 and prides itself on the "do-it-yourself" attitude of Portland, Oregon. They have a relationship with Loft Organic Liqueurs to produce the grain alcohol base used for the liqueurs offered by that California based company. New Deal comes with a philosophy of local spirits over industrial vodka "made in a vat the size of a city block" by "a consortium of people more interested in diversifying their portfolios than sitting down for a sip with customers." The distillery is meant to be a symbol of hope, progress, and prosperity.
