North of Scotland 1973 HQF 47 Years Old Tasting Notes

Nose: Starts with plenty of classical fresh pencil shavings, glue, and sawdust. Layers of bees waxed furniture, overripe bananas, and dried coconuts. Associations of cooked apples and candied oranges. Touch of cake mix and acacia honey in the background

Palate: Very creamy and 'fattish' mouth texture with caramel, cinnamon, and vanilla. Also big raisins, molasses, and rum-like sugar cane. Hints of maple syrup. Gingerbread. Cream fudge intermingled with white chocolate. Touch of cocoa.

Finish: Medium long with ginger and a little nutmeg. Stays quite sweet till the end.

Distillery Information

The "North of Scotland" distillery was founded in 1958 by George Christie who would later found the Speyside distillery in Kingussie. The distillery was built on the site of the former Robert Knox's Forth Brewery which was founded in 1786, which was near the Cambus distillery.
Initially, the distillery intended to produce single malt whiskey, but it only took two years for the conversion to a grain distillery to be completed. The production of single malt was done initially with modified Coffey-type stills (intended for the continuous production of grain whisky).
