The initial oak aromas of mocha and vanilla bean are enticing, leading to a firm mix of fine-grained, gravel-laced dark berry, espresso, black licorice and cedar cigar box notes. Ends with firming tannins.

• Wine Advocate: The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. They make about 700 cases of this wine, which has an opaque purple color and offers up notes of pen ink, blueberry liqueur, creosote, camphor and incense. It displays a touch of smoky barrique, but is already irresistible in its fleshy, full-bodied opulence, power, purity and over all hedonistic and intellectual appeal. This estate is the old Wolf property, a 12 acre vineyard in the heart of the St. Helena AVA. It is owned by David Sinegal, who is part of the successful Costco empire. The wines are very impressive, as one might expect with the assets behind a vineyard such as this. There are essentially three cuvées.

• Vinous: The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has really come together beautifully over the last year. Energetic and explosive in the glass, the 2013 possesses notable richness and distinctiveness throughout. Savory herbs, tobacco, leather and licorice blossom as the wine fills out its ample frame effortlessly. Firm, chalky tannins lend support. Winemaker Tony Biagi has managed to preserve a good deal of freshness for such a big, opulent wine.

Sinegal Estate is a wine producer based in St Helena, in the heart of the Napa Valley wine region of California. It produces a small range of wines from its nine-acre (3.6 hectare) vineyard in what was formerly known as The Inglewood Estate – a 30-acre property in southern St Helena at the foot the Mayacamas Range that forms the western edge of the Napa Valley. The the property, which already housed a winery and vineyard, was purchased by the co-founder and former CEO of the Costco wholesale empire, James Sinegal, in 2013 for a reported US$20 million. It had once been the Jaeger family estate before being acquired by Doug and Jane Wolf (and housing Wolf Family Vineyards) until the pair decided to sell in 2011. The vineyard comprises a range of varieties with both red and white grapes planted. However, the selection is very Bordeaux-focussed with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot for the red varieties and Sauvignon Blanc (and its Sauvignon Musqué clone) and Semilion for the whites. A range of labels are made from organically-grown fruit on the estate including a Reserve and standard Cabernet Sauvignon and a Sauvignon Blanc (all of which include other varieties grown on the property, albeit in a very minor percentage). Other wines from vineyards in the wider region are also produced, including a Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast.
