Smoky/savoury but on the palate, there's more intense apricot, not quite as intense on the mid palate, with the fruit more to the fore when you taste it. Fresh and balanced.

• Wine Advocate: The 2020 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #5 offers a deep and coolish, flinty and rather spicy more than fruity nose with piquant lemon and grapefruit as well as ripe and fine raisin aromas. Round, lush and precise on the filigreed palate, this is a beautifully elegant, piquant and fruity Spätlese with vibrantly fine acidity and crisp grape berry and apple fruit. Very delicate and digestible even at this early stage, with a tense, salty-mineral finish.

• James Suckling: Could a modern Mosel Spätlese be more classic than this? Stunningly ripe stone-fruit and floral character, married to considerable richness, with an almost buttery texture on the mid-palate. Long and succulent finish that remains fresh and vivid.

Weingut Willi Schaefer is a Mosel wine estate based in the village of Graach in Bereich Bernkastel. The winery is a member of the VDP and is solely devoted to the production of high-quality Riesling wines. The small family winery cultivates its Riesling grapes in parcels situated in the VDP-classified Erste Lage sites of Graacher Dompropst and Graacher Himmelreich in Graach, as well as Wehlener Sonnenuhr in Wehlen. These vineyards comprise of up to 100-year-old, ungrafted vines that lie on steep slopes of Devonian blue slate. The estate's Graach parcels enjoy south-to-southwest exposures that are bathed in sunlight throughout the day. This in combination with the cool climate typical of the Mosel region provides the ideal growing conditions for Riesling grapes.
