Distillery Information
The Lagavulin distillery is in Islay near to the ruin of Dunyvaig Castle. In Gaelic Lagavulin means “the hollow where the mill is” and it is also one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Lagavulin whisky is styled “Lord of the Isles – the definitive Islay Malt”.
The water that Lagavulin use is drawn from Solan Lochs which flow through heavy peat bogs. They combine this water with heavily-peated barley, which results in a very powerful smelling whisky. The barrels of whisky are matured in sheds above the beach, where the salty fresh air gives the whisky its particular smell and taste. Lagavulin also has a fantastic visitors centre that is open all year round.
