The portfolio is based on very small parcels of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines in dozens of appellations across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Quantities of individual wines are often tiny, with some wines produced in a single barrique, realizing just 300 bottles. The first vintage was in 1988 and Laurent soon after earnt a reputation for using 200-percent new oak, a process which involves racking wine out of one new barrel for further aging in a second new barrel. Early labels read \"Dom. Laurent\"; a deliberately ambiguous ploy, given the owners first name and the fact that the operation was not a domaine, since no vineyards were owned.
