      Detailed Description

      Producer Information

Vignamaggio is one of Tuscany's oldest estates, located in the Chianti Classico region at the source of the Greve River and best known for its red wines from the Sangiovese grape. The estate was founded in 1302 by the noble Gherardini family, after their castle on the other side of the Val di Greve was destroyed in a war. The first records of winemaking at Vignamaggio date back to 1404.Within the 200-hectare (500-acre) property there are 62 hectares (153 acres) of vines, 80 percent of which are Sangiovese. A new winemaking facility was built in 2010, directly opposite the medieval villa. Grapes are received on the top floor of the winery and after sorting and crushing are gravity-fed into temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks on the floor below. All reds are aged in large oak casks in the estate's 15th Century cellars.Vignamaggio makes a range of wines, many of which fall under the Chianti Classico DOCG. There are two standard Chianti Classico wines, the Terre di Prenzano, a varietal Sangiovese, and the Gherardino, which features 10-20 percent Merlot.
