Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The 2001 Cote Rotie La Landonne reveals a roasted espresso character along with licorice, pepper, scorched earth, and dense blackberry and cassis fruit. Firm, tannic, and masculine as well as aromatic (a characteristic of this cool vintage), it requires another 2-3 years of cellaring, after which it should last for 7-8 years. Rene Rostaing is one of the most masterful growers and bottlers of Cote Rotie. Sadly, there is not much produced.
- John Gilman: The 2001 Rostaing La Landonne is a lovely wine that is still a bit youthfully angular and in need of further bottle age to really start to drink well, but its promise is quite evident. The bouquet is already quite complex and classy, delivering a fine constellation of black raspberries, gamebirds, pepper, a superb signature of soil and a topnote of bonfires. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, nascently complex and still quite chewy in personality, with a fine core, firm tannins and very good length and grip on the tangy and promising finish. I suspect the good acids here have slowed this vintage’s evolution a bit, and the wine still needs at least a half dozen more years in the cellar to really start to blossom. It may well eventually end up quite similar in style to the fine 1988 La Landonne.
Producer Information
Domaine Rostaing, often called René Rostaing after its founder, is a leading wine estate in the Côte-Rôtie region of the Northern Rhône, and particularly known for its Syrah-based wines. The first Rostaing wine was produced in 1971 when the estate covered a mere 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres) split between the Côte Blonde and La Landonne subregions of the Côte Rôtie. This slowly grew as Rostaing purchased additional plots and the took over his uncle's and his father-in-law's vineyards. Today the domaine has just over seven hectares (18 acres) of vineyards in the wider Côte Rôtie – a sizeable holding by the region's standards – plus one hectare (2.5 acres) in the white wine (Viognier-based) appellation of Condrieu, which produces the La Bonnette cuvée. Rostaing also owns a small plot in Lézardes, on the northern border of Côte Rôtie, where he makes Syrah and Viognier wines under the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes designation. Rostaing makes several Côte Rôtie wines. This includes cuvées from both the La Landonne and Côte Blonde subregions, and the Ampodium, which comes from other sites within the appellation. These are aged in a mix of regular and large-format barrels, with a very small proportion of new oak. Rostaing also owns an estate near Nîmes where it produces wines under the Languedoc appellation.h.
