This is a classic St.-Julien with red fruit and delicate herbs on the nose. The oak is quite discreet both there and on the mid-weight body. Then the serious but rather elegant dry tannins come through on the long finish.

• Vinous: The 2014 Lagrange is terrific. Bold, juicy and exuberant, the 2014 possesses striking balance and textural richness. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, iron, smoke and tobacco underpin a core of intense red-toned fruit in a super-expressive, layered wine endowed with real pedigree. The firm, muscular tannins need time to soften, but there is plenty to look forward to.

• Wine Enthusiast: Firm and still dry with the solid tannins, the wine's ripe fruitiness is developing well. The combination gives great potential. Black currant and berry fruits are both there with crisp juicy acidity. The aftertaste is a reminder that this wine has a long way to go. Drink from 2024.

Château Lagrange is a well-regarded wine estate based in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Haut-Médoc region, north of Bordeaux city on the so-called "left bank" of the Gironde estuary. The estate was classified as a third growth in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc and Graves. Its eponymous grand vin regularly receives high ratings and critical praise. Historically, there is evidence that grapes were planted here in the Middle Ages but it was not until the 17th Century, with the amalgamation of two properties (the "tenement of Pellecahus" and Lagrange) that the genesis of the current property was formed under the noble title of Lagrange de Monteil. The estate was passed between many well-known wine merchants and families throughout the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries until the current owners, Japanese drinks giant Suntory, purchased the estate in 1983. The wider estate covers 118 hectares (291 acres) with red grape varieties broken up between Cabernet Sauvignon (67 percent), Merlot (28 percent) and five percent Petit Verdot. The estate also boasts 11 hectares (27 acres) of white varieties made up of 80 percent Sauvignon Blanc, ten percent Sauvignon Gris and ten percent Sémillon. The composition of the wines reflect the ratios of planting with some of th oldest vines dating back to the 1950s. The eponymous grand vin is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend, aged for nearly two years in 60 percent new oak.
