Producer Information

Bodegas Burgo Viejo is a winery in the Rioja region of Spain. It makes a wide range of wines, most of which are reds based on Tempranillo, spanning from Joven styles through Crianza to Gran Reserva. The company originated in 1987 as the combined effort of six neighboring farming families who all wished to try their hand at winemaking. The bodega's vineyards go through Alfaro in the Rioja to the Ebro Valley, and the grape varieties grown include Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Grenache, Graciano and Viura. Some of these vineyards date back over 30 years to the bodega's beginnings. Grapes are made in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Crianza through to Gran Reserva wines are aged in 225 liter oak casks. There is an 80:20 split in favor of American over French oak. The winery initially started by selling bulk wine but today there are four key ranges. The standard Burgo Viejo wines include a Viura, a Grenache, several Tempranillo blends and a Tempanillo Gran Reserva. The Alfaro's Terroir range comprises the Palacio del Burgo, the Finca los Principes, the Señorío de Cofin and the Graco Imperator. The Four Seasons range is made up of the Palacio de Verano, the Palacio de Otoño, the Palacio de Primavera and the Palacio de Invierno. Each of which, as the names suggest, represent a season. Finally, the Winemaker Choice range which comprises of the Licenciado, the Betis, the Perseverance and the Juglar del Rey.
