      Detailed Description

      From the excellent 2015 vintage, this blend of 81% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon is wonderfully ripe and intense, offering up notes of plum, black cherry, truffle and wild herbs. A delightfully generous yet superbly well-balanced example of Right Bank Bordeaux with excellent ageing potential.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: Composed of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc coming mainly from clay soils on the plateau and aged for one year in oak, 65% new, the 2015 Clos du Clocher springs forth with profound notes of crushed blackberries, black cherries and blueberry compote plus touches of iron ore, bouquet garni, beef drippings and black soil. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated in the mouth, it fills the palate with generous black and blue fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with persistent minerally notes.
        • James Suckling: Wild violets and blueberries meld with earthy, almost truffle-like aromas. The palate is a powerhouse of ripe-plum, dark-cherry and blueberry flavors cast amid sturdy, powerful, long tannins. Finishes fresh and vivid. A standout wine. Try from 2023.

        Producer Information

        Jean-Baptiste Audy is family-run négociant firm based in Libourne and owner of a number of châteaux estates across Bordeaux's Right Bank (the appellations on the right bank of the Dordogne river), including properties in Pomerol, Lussac-Saint-Émilion and Lalande de Pomerol.
        Operating from its base on the Quai du Priourat on the very banks of the Dordogne in Libourne town (a historic négociant location – JP Janoueix is a neighbor and JP Moueix is a few doors down), Jean-Baptiste Audy also has exclusive trade and distribution partnerships with numerous châteaux.
        The company is perhaps best known for its ownership of wine estates in nearby appellations. These include:
        Clos de Clocher (Pomerol), a 4.6 hectare (11 acre) property divided into three plots on iron-rich clay soils, planted to 70 percent Merlot with the remainder Cabernet Franc just outside the hamlet of Catusseau, not far from Le Pin and Vieux Château Certan;
        Château Bonalgue (Pomerol), a 9.4 hectare (23 acre) estate at the southwestern end of the appellation, on the outskirts of Libourne, planted to 90 percent Merlot and ten percent Cabernet Franc;
        Château Monregard La Croix (Pomerol), a 1.3 hectare (3.2 acre) plot of Merlot that was originally part of the wider Clos du Clocher property but on sandier soils and is now vinified separately;
        Château du Courlat (Lussac-Saint-Émilion), one of Audy's top châteaux, the 17-hectare (42-acre) Courlat is planted predominantly to Merlot, with a fraction of Cabernet Franc. The estate also produces Cuvée Jean-Baptise from the best parcels on the property which is aged for 20 months in French oak. A rosé – Le Rosé du Courlat – is also produced;
        Château Les Hauts-Conseillants (Lalande de Pomerol), a ten-hectare (25 acre) property covering two vineyards, one in Néac and one in Lalande de Pomerol, planted to around 90 percent Merlot and ten percent Cabernet Franc.
        For some of its estates, Audy employs the services of renowned enologist Michel Rolland's wine consultancy firm.
        The company was founded in 1906 by Jean-Baptiste Audy, and today is run by his great-grandson, Jean-Baptiste Bourotte. As well as distribution deals with a number of estates across the wider Bordeaux region, the firm also produces a number of négoce labels including the likes of Audy Bordeaux rouge and Jean Baptiste Audy Brut – a Crémant de Bordeaux.
