      Detailed Description

The complexity of the aromas and the quality are surprising. Excellent nose. There is a superposition of aromatic layers that express themselves. The oak is very discreet, always holding the fruit and the spicy notes. The layer of fruit aromas is abundant, with a clear profile of black fruits, highlighting black plum and blueberries. In the layer of spices there is a play of cloves, black pepper and a light touch of cinnamon. In the background, details of very subtle white flowers can be seen. The aroma of the moist earth, which brings mineral memories, mixes with that of the cocoa in a really pleasant aromatic layer.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: 2017 was a very difficult year, and I found intense herbal notes and evolved aromas in the 2017 Roda I. The palate has abundant dusty tannins and marked rusticity. I don't think this is up to speed with other vintages of Roda I. 118,500 bottles. It was bottled in July 2019.
        • James Suckling: Aromas of blackberries, ripe blueberries, figs, cedar and roasted meat. It’s medium-to full-bodied with plush tannins and fresh acidity. Juicy and textured with a polished, rich core of fruit and spice. Flavorful, long finish.

        Producer Information

Bodegas Roda is a leading winery in the Rioja Alta region of Spain, known for its densely fruity wines made predominantly from Tempranillo. The winery, founded in 1987, is located on the edge of the railway station district of Haro next to La Rioja Alta. The vineyards are spread over around 20 old vine plots, mostly in Rioja Alta, and are planted to bush vines. Harvests are all carried out by hand into 18-kilo (40-pound) crates for gentle transportation. All Roda wines are fermented in French oak vats. They are only matured in French oak barrels - traditionally American oak is most common in the region. The old 19th century cellars are dried out by hot and cold water absorption. This is part of a clever renewable water system that both heats and cools the facilities.
