Brilliant, intensive yellow. The nose is complex with aromas of fruity nuances of exotic fruits such as pineapple, notes of blossoms and flowers, as well as rose petals and light toast aromas. Dense and complex, the wine enthuses on the palate with fullness and structure, creamily soft and elegant, stimulatingly fresh and juicy with a discreetly incorporated, modest notes of wood and a long reverberation of taste.

• Wine Advocate: A blend of mostly Chardonnay with a small selection of other white grapes, the Elena Walch 2018 Alto Adige Beyond the Clouds is fragrant and bright with a little sliver of Italian sunshine locked deep within. It reveals yellow rose, orchard fruit, dried apricot, pine nut and acacia honey. This vintage is less overtly perfumed than previous editions I have tasted. Beyond the Clouds appears dry in terms of mouthfeel in 2018, whereas previous vintages showed a little more softness and fruity plushness. If this vintage represents a turning point in the wine's style, I give it two thumbs up. I love the linearity and the refreshing acidity.

• James Suckling: Very intense aromas of ripe apples, spice, toffee, dried mushrooms and candied orange, following through to a full body with layers of beautiful fruit and a phenolic mouth feel that makes it chewy and fascinating. Dried-apple, walnut, praline and toffee notes at the end. Drink or hold.

Elena Walch is an Italian wine producer situated in the country's most northerly wine region ? Alto Adige. The estate's portfolio of wines includes local grape varieties such as Pinot Grigio, Lagrein and Schiava, as well as Germanic varieties including Müller-Thurgau and Riesling alongside Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Merlot. Elena Walch has 55 hectares (136 acres) of cultivated vineyards around Alto Adige, including its two most prestigious vineyards: Vigna Kastelaz and Vigna Castel Ringberg. Vigna Kastelaz occupies south-facing chalky slopes that overlook the village of Tramin and is primarily planted to Gewürztraminer and Merlot. The 20ha (49 acre) Vigna Castel Ringberg vineyard is situated in Caldaro, close to the 17th Century Castel Ringberg built by the Hapsburg family. This vineyard is the largest single vineyard of state's vineyards and wine cellars in Tramin and Caldaro.its kind in Alto Adige and sits at an altitude of 1080 feet (330 meters) above sea level. It is here that the estate cultivates its more well-known grape varieties including Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as the more regional-specific varieties, Lagrein and Schiava. The Vigna Kastelaz and Vigna Castel Ringberg vineyards are the foundation of Elena Walch's extensive wine range. They are also the basis of its single-vineyard red and white wines that are drawn from selected vineyard parcels. A prime example is the estate's Vigna Castel Ringberg Kalterersee, a Schiava-based wine aged in a mix of Slavonian and French oak barrels and steel vats for between one to four years.
