      Producer Information

Podere Grattamacco is an Italian wine producer situated on a hilltop between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri in Tuscany. The estate was founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, with a first vintage produced the following year from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Merlot. It is best known for its Bolgheri Rosso Superiore DOC wines. Podere Grattamacco's land covers 50 hectares (124 acres) with vines planted to half the estate. Vineyards are composed of three principle soil types: silt and red sandy soil, calcareous flysch, and sandy calcareous flysch. Around 60 percent of the vineyard land is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 percent to Sangiovese, 10 percent to Merlot, 10 percent to Cabernet Franc, and five percent to Petit Verdot. The estate also produces Vermentino from vines that average 20 years old. Grapes are manually harvested and ferment in open-topped, cone-shaped oak vats with a long maceration. Malolactic fermentation develops spontaneously in French oak barriques and wines are barrel matured from 12 to 18 months before bottle aging for a minimum of six months. Podere Grattamacco produces two Cabernet Sauvignon dominant red blends: Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso Superiore and L'Alberello. It also produces the white Grattamacco Bolgheri Vermentino. Podere Grattamacco is owned by the Castello Colle Massari wine group who also own the San Giorgio and Poggio di Sotto estates, both located in Montalcino.
